Anti-Hunger Program

Hunger is one of the grave problems facing the world today. Rotarians like to concentrate their efforts in their own communities. They can. Hunger is here. It’s down the street and around the corner. It’s a hidden problem. People don’t readily admit they are in need and often have to make a choice between paying the rent and eating. The Maryland Food Bank says 43% of those it serves are children. Rotarians can provide strong leadership in this area.
Anti-hunger programs are a point of emphasis for Rotary. Our District Governors have asked the District Anti-Hunger Resource Committee, a group of volunteers from around the District, to provide leadership and support for this important project. Where do we begin? We ask each Club to assign at least one member to lead the Club’s attack on hunger. This could be the Community Service Lane Director or another interested Rotarian. That person would work with the Club President to select and implement anti-hunger programs.
Project selection is flexible. Some Clubs already have ongoing programs. If you do, great! If possible, let’s add to it. If you don’t currently have a program, there are many ways to help feed hungry people. You can set up fundraisers; work as volunteers at the local food banks, feeding programs or kitchens; or collect food donations. Rotarians have great imaginations and superior leadership skills. Let’s use them! The committee also stands ready to provide suggestions and assistance in selecting and implementing these projects.
Also, consider joining the District Anti-Hunger Resource Committee which meets monthly at the Maryland Food Bank.
