A joint effort of Rotarians from Southern Illinois Rotary District 6510, Rotarians in Belize and physicians of Shriners Hospitals for Children in St. Louis, The Belize Children's Project provides orthopedic treatment for children of the country of Belize. For over 33 years, the project has provided treatment for over 340 children. A non-profit corporation established by Rotary District 6510 raises funding through donations from Rotary Clubs, fund raisers and donations by individuals. A 27 member committee of Rotarians in District 6510 oversees the project. Gary Owen, John Coers and Greg Yank of The Rotary Club of O'Fallon have served on this committee. The Rotary Club of O'Fallon has contributed money to the project for many years.

Rotary Clubs in Belmopan and Belize City, Belize coordinate screening clinics and arrange passports and visas for children to travel to Southern Illinois. Physicians from Shriners travel to Belize to evaluate candidates to determine those most likely to be helped. Rotarians and associates in Southern Illinois arrange host families to house the children and provide transportation to the hospital for treatment. Host families commit a significant amount of their time to the children and many have established life-long friendships with the families of the children they host.

The on-going need of the project is money and host families. Clubs can help by continuing or increasing their financial support and by helping recruit families to host children. There is an almost infinite need for both money and host families.
