History
In 1985 Summit Rotary Club, with a contribution from Buck Campbell, established a single $500.00 scholarship. At the urging of Ken Newbold, the Greensboro School Superintendent at the time, the club decided to “Rotate” the scholarship to each of the city schools on a 4 year cycle.
Shortly after this program was established, a founding member of Summit Rotary Club, past club president, past district governor, Tom McKnight, passed away. To honor this outstanding member, this scholarship was named “The McKnight Scholarship.” For many years the scholarship was awarded on a rotating basis to graduating seniors at Page, Dudley, Smith and Grimsley high schools.
In 2006, club members Glenn “Buck “ Campbell and Salem Bullard challenged the other club members to fund additional scholarships. Buck Campbell kept asking the question, “Wouldn’t it be nice to have a scholarship for each school in Guilford County?” From 2003 to 2010, 71 scholarships for a total of $70,000 have been awarded, and today, the program awards 11 scholarships annually to the named schools above.
